Alice Smeets - TRANSIT
Photography

The title of this new exhibition by Alice Smeets is “Transit”, as the photographer herself is in, constantly, between brief stopovers. But the protagonists of Smeets’ photo works are travelers in different countries and cultures, using diverse means, like the horse rider in the middle of a street in an Indian metropolis, amidst cars and rickshaws, or the child looking at clouds out of a bus window, wistfully dreaming.

Godfried Donkor - PEOPLE OF UTOPIA
Solo exhibition from 14th October untill 18th November 2011
Extended until 22nd December 2011!

Godfried Donkor was born in Ghana in 1964 and left his African home at the tender age of eight. He grew up in Europe, completed his education in Spain and England and after his studies settled in London as a freelance artist. Godfried Donkor uses a range of different techniques. In addition to painting, drawing and photography, the traditional collage is his dominant means of expression in his works on paper.

People of Utopia represents the creative tension between reality and fiction in his art. As someone who straddles borders between continents and cultures, the artist is interested in historical, sociological and societal topics and, in particular, the shared history of the peoples of Africa and
Europe. In view of this, he reflects on the marketing of people in all its facets, a complex of themes that runs like a red thread through his individual work cycles.

Simultaneously to the exhibition there is an extensive catalogue book with texts by Jennifer Burris and Emma Dexter. The book is already available before exhibition disclosure.

Jessica Hilltout - AMEN

In Africa, football is not a religion. But it is everything a religion should be.
Every village in Africa has one open-air temple with goal posts at opposite ends and devoted followers in the middle.
Football breathes happiness into sun-baked days and rain-soaked evenings.
On a continent where not even the basics are taken for-granted, football is precious.
And like everything that’s truly precious, it’s a necessity, like bread and water.
Amen. So be it.
Ian Brower

Jessica Hilltout spent the last two years working on a project called AMEN - Grassroots football in Africa. Nine month covering ten countries and 20,000 km on the African continent. The aim of this project was to show the importance of football on the African continent. The power of the ball and the beautiful game, whether it be in professional clubs or small rural villages, is enormous. Here football is not just a game, it is the glue that binds village to village, team to team, tribe to tribe and people to people.

ARTCO Galerie
Highlight in September:
Owusu - Ankomah - Prelude to the Microcron
Solo exhibition from 9th September - 7th October 2011

The Ghanaian painter Owusu-Ankomah, who has been living in Germany for 30 years, today ranks among the most prominent representatives of contemporary African art. His solid career as an artist is marked by significant exhibitions around the world. There is not an important presentation of works on modern Africa to which the artist is not invited.
The monograph FUTURE TRACK, published in 2006, is dedicated to the artistic development of Owusu-Ankomah from the 1990s onwards: starting with early paintings with themes that are strongly shaped by African myths and allegories through to the powerfully semantic paintings of his MOVEMENT series.

What is clearly recognisable is that, over the years, the artist has increasingly devoted his works to spiritual and metaphysical themes. Spirituality is increasingly becoming a source of inspiration for his art. It was in particular the large-format, condensed canvases of the MOVEMENT series, reduced to a black-and-white colour scheme, that constituted an important turning point in the artistic evolution of Owusu-Ankomah, gaining the artist high recognition and appreciation on the international art markets. His few still available works from this series are sought-after collector’s items, commanding lofty prices at international auctions.

For the first time in Germany ARTCO presents the first 33 works of the series Prelude to the Microcron, which were created following a brief creative hiatus. Prelude to the Microcron marks both an end point and a new beginning for Owusu’s artistic creations. The depiction of people in an idealised form, penetrated and superimposed by symbols and pictograms, is characteristic of Owusu-Ankomah’s works of the past few years. These are often the meaningful adinkra symbols from West Africa, which clearly remind us of the artist’s origins.

Simultaneously to the exhibition there will be an extensive catalogue book. In this book, art historian Daniela Roth and artist/critic Marie Pittroff study the current work of Owusu-Ankomah from various perspectives. The artist himself has written an essay, affording
insight into his spiritual thoughts.

Hector Acebes - Portraits in Africa

The Africans in Hector Acebes’ photographs are many things: wary, flirtatious, proud, irritated, and amused. Normally, a photo might say a thousand words. But with these remarkable photos of Africa, that estimate must be raised considerably. Acebes, a New-York-born Colombian with a decidedly international upbringing and spirit of adventure to match, journeyed throughout Africa in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s with a camera and an eye for the realities missed by so many other photographers before him. Most photographers made no attempt to depict anything but the most crude stereotypes of what white Europeans and Americans expected or wanted to see. Acebes was a glaring exception.

His subjects were the people, of all ages and social positions, from the most remote, primitive areas of the continent, to the most metropolitan of cities. But his camera and his perspective caught something special. While other photographers used 35mm cameras, which they pointed like a gun at the subject, Acebes preferred a Rolleiflex, a camera he held at belt level, composing the shot by looking down. The photographer could then look up and make eye contact with the subject a second before releasing the shutter. The result captured that bit of personality and humanity so wanting in other photos of that era. Acebes explained that this method was less intimidating and created a personal relationship with the subject.

The photographer recently celebrated his 90th anniversary and lives in Bogotá, Colombia.
ARTCO presents in this solo show thirty silver gelatin prints for the first time in Germany.

Cape Town / South-Africa
“He never gave up – his body did.”
(Gordon Clark)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Leon Botha, an artist, a musician and an exemplary human being.

On the 4th of June, he was in the midst of his 26th birthday party when he had a sudden seizure and was rushed to the hospital. He passed away the following morning. The irony of this sorrowful event taking place when it did is poignant to say the least.

It was through an exhibition of photographs in October last year that ARTCO Galerie had introduced Leon Botha to art lovers in this part of Germany. Titled “Who Am I? – Transgressions”, it was a series of works on which Leon had collaborated with photographer Gordon Clark.
In a way, the altered reality that the photographs sought to articulate was his own, living as he did, a young man, in a rapidly aging body owing to progeria. Experiencing youth and old age at once, he had a different take on life and death, which enriched the perspective of all those who came to know him and his work.

Along with Gordon, Leon was supposed to attend the opening of “Who Am I?” at ARTCO, their first ever show in Germany, but days before his scheduled trip he had a massive stroke and remained hospitalized for weeks. The exhibition, which also included a few of Leon’s paintings, was a huge success, and his presence was sorely missed during the course of the entire show.

Despite his fast deteriorating condition, and one debilitating attack after another, Leon’s journey as an artist had continued -- until the last birthday of his life.
Those of us that had the good fortune of knowing him in person will forever cherish his memories. And his indomitable spirit will live on among countless people around the world, in hearts that had been touched by his story.

Our deepest condolences go out to Leon's family, and all those who knew and loved him.

Positionen/ Positions
An exhibition featuring works from the Kindermann Collection.

For the first time, ARTCO Galerie presents selected works from a private collection. Without the support and commitment of art collectors and patrons, the German museum environment would not be as lively as it is. However, collections focusing on African contemporary art are still quite scarce in the German-speaking world, although the trend, fortunately, seems to be changing. One such noteworthy collection happens to belong to the Austrian collector Erich Kindermann, whose unflagging commitment to collecting contemporary African art is honoured through this exhibition.

On display are works by the following artists:

Tété Azankpo - Frédéric Bruly Bouabré - Norman Catherine - Godfried Donkor - Sokari Douglas Camp CBE - Francois du Plessis - Sokey Edorh - Amouzou Glikpa - Chia Rissa Gildemeister - George "Afedzi" Hughes - EL Loko - Luis Meque - Yves Midahuen (Midy) - Owusu-Ankomah - Kofi Setordji - Rikki Wemega-Kwawu - Zinkpe

Duration of the exhibition: 11 March - 8 April 2011

Following exhibitions in Joao Ferreira Gallery, Cape Town,

Gordon Clark is an internationally renowned South African photo-artist whose works have been shown in some leading institutions and museums. A native of Cape Town, artist Leon Botha has been enduring a rare genetic condition named Progeria (rapid ageing). At 25, he is perhaps the world’s oldest living person with Progeria. His physiological condition however has not deterred him from working obsessively as an artist and musician.
