ARTCO Gallery starts its exhibition program 2007 directly with a highlight.
Internationally renowned and important
African artists were among the guests of the opening of the group show
"Africa Select" at ARTCO Gallery.

"Africa Select I" is the starting point of a new series of group exhibitions. With these
shows we would like to present the latest currents in African art and the various positions of contemporary African artists.

We have selected six artists for this first presentation - one lady and five men - all of
whom use different forms of expression and techniques.
As multifarious as their way of working may be, as different their intentions or the message they want to bring across - there is, without fail, one common factor in their works, and that is the common ground they share in their African cultural heritage.

The aesthetics of some of the exhibited works is unusual for the viewer. The art works are often disturbing and accusing.
They reflect the political and social situation in Africa and deal with the problematic relationship between Africa and Europe or Africa and the western world.

The fact that the artists all come from West Africa , from Ghana, Benin and Nigeria, is mere coincidence.

The decisive criterion in selecting the artists
was, however, the quality of their work the
polarization of their artistic expression.
