Tété Azankpo’s relief works are created in line with traditional collage principles. The materials he uses – painted wooden billboards and enameled iron dishes – are part of everyday life in Togo and serve him as a potent source of inspiration. The large colorful enameled dishes (often with imaginative ornamental plants) are used by womenfolk to carry goods on their heads. The wooden billboards, on the other hand, are used for advertising purposes (a board depicting heads with various hairstyles, for instance, would be used by a hairdresser).
