4 on level 3: charity show

18 July - 29 August 2020

Despite the current difficult circumstances, we present our second show at Fairweather House in Cape Town under level 3 regulations of the lockdown. ARTCO is delighted to present works by four internationally known artists in a special group show. On display are paintings, sculptures, drawings and graphics by:

EL Loko, 1950-2016, Togo / Germany - Toyin Loye, 1959, Nigeria / The Netherlands
Francois du Plessis, 1961, South Africa / Germany - Ransome Stanley, 1953, UK / Germany

The impacts of the Corona pandemic have of course hit the entire arts and culture sector significantly. Many galleries and artists are currently struggling worldwide to survive.
But in this situation, we think of those who have been affected even more by the crisis.

The entire South African economy is experiencing a deep recession, which has led to a surge in the already very high unemployment rate. This affects especially the many day laborers who can no longer feed their families from one day to the next. Considering the current status of Covid-19 in South Africa and particularly the Western Cape, it is highly unlikely that the majority of the individuals will be earning a regular income any time soon.

The South African society is characterized by the fact that they stand together in times of crisis, which clearly shows the variety of private and institutional initiatives to help each other. One of these initiatives that our Gallery wants to support is the DUNOON FEEDING Project of the Lions Club Milnerton..

This Project was started by Christiana Groenewoud and Nicky Rheeder in April 2020. The project was initiated in response to the great need for assistance with food, solely due to the lockdown creating a massive loss of income and the lack of National government support. What started out as a few neighbours making soup quickly grew into food parcel distribution.

Since the first food parcel delivery on the 15th of April 2020 up until the 8th of June 2020 they have distributed 2270 parcels in Dunoon alone. Each parcel contains enough food to support a family of 4 for a week or more. This translates to 63 560 meals!

Christiana and Nicky have over 4000 pending requests for food with more requests streaming in every day. They can only provide each family with 1 parcel in order to assist as many people as possible. The demand is too great to be able to give a single family a food parcel more than once, however much we would love to do so! It is highly likely that this need will remain for some time after lockdown until those who have lost their jobs are able to find work again.

ARTCO and its artists are happy to support this initiative of solidarity.

50 % of all sales from the “4 on level 3” will be donated to the Dunoon Feeding Project on behalf of our clients.
