George Afedzi Hughes: ARTCO Galerie

18 September - 8 October 2009

In the future, we will present selected artistic positions in solo exhibitions parallel to the larger showrooms in the Kunstraum, in the atrium of the gallery. We start with paintings by the Ghanaian-rooted and US-based artist George Afedzi Hughes.

In his works, George Afedzi Hughes reflects on his experiences with the different cultures, African, European and American. This field of tension gives the artist the opportunity to include a whole series of creative hypotheses in his reflections and investigations. His bizarre cubist and mechanical heads are often reminiscent of the oppressive imagery of a Pablo Picasso or Francis Bacon. His emotional images are rich in symbolism and clear in their statement. They can captivate, disturb or agitate the viewer.
